Right. [ he's not so sure he believes it, but he'll hope for the best case scenario on that one, because he's a lot more worried about... this. he gets up and goes over to the door to test it, but they all know what he's going to say; ] Locked. And I'm guessing a lockpick wouldn't work on it, either.
Alright, McGuyver. [ it's not disbelief, considering everything else, but he still needs to make the joke. ] We knew this might happen. It's... frustrating, but at least we weren't taken by surprise. Let's try to see how long we stay up. Maybe the door locking will be the only portion of it.
That's about how long it took for us on the ship, too. Too bad there are no clocks anywhere around here. [ he huffs a bit ] Did you guys get any? Is there just a weird aversion to telling time in these places?
[he thinks back on that conversation and sort of. makes a face, but. for now he'll focus on what Dick is saying]
I spent one Thursday night in the billiards room, only to wake up the next day unable to answer any questions with anything other than magic 8-ball quotes.
But yeah. Every week. People staying in the library would get random knowledge, some people woke up with phantom injuries that faded the next day, and one week people even smelled like perfume.
It was an easy way to tell who actually fell asleep the night before. Anyone who was either awake at night or who fell asleep in their room didn't have these effects.
Still. Catching people in a lie is pretty much the entire point of those trials. The more they lie, the easier it is to find one thing that doesn't add up.
[THIS WEEK FOR CURFEW, CABIN DE CHIPMUNK IS GOING CAMPING!! Akira has procured snacks from the kitchen (chocolate, graham crackers, marshmallows) and has made sure to bring with him his blankets from his bed and also his pillows. Dick's pillows. whatever, they're pillows]
[either yy or dick get the campfire started because Akira doesn't know how to start fires, but either way, once said fire is started Akira is going to casually toast his marshmallows over it]
anyway, dick also brought stuff they're going to have to wash for this fun camping trip, and he is getting the fire started because yin yu has a BOOBOO on his HANDS. no fire starting for you, mister!!! ]
I've got a pen. [ he tilts his head ] You want to try writing effects down when we wake up before we share them?
well, this probably isn't safe, but, honestly, being locked inside was more concerning than anything. at least if something hellish happens outside this time, yin yu will be around to try and stop it. not that he's apparently in shape to be stopping it, despite the fact that he's mostly fine....
he doesn't have a pencil, so. he looks to akira curiously at the request too, mask now off of his face so his expression is easier to see. ] That isn't a bad idea.
[it's no more unsafe than staying literally anywhere else, in Akira's opinion. if things here are like how things played out in the mansion, then by the time they pass out for the night. . . all the doors are unlocked, anyway]
[Akira turns his marshmallow over the flames before pulling it back and gently blowing on it]
Mmm. It should be the first thing we do when we wake up tomorrow morning. Write it down at once, and then share it at once.
[nods!!]
That way we'll all know right away if we're clear.
If it's at once, we'll definitely need more pens. [ dick is sitting back just watching the fire for a little bit ] I've only got the one. Could always write it with sticks. [ he hums a little ] So did the people who turned just pretend they slept alone every time?
[ mmm... yin yu watches akira turn the marshmallows over. he's even quieter than usual after the day's events, but, he's paying attention to the conversation... ]
...I believe it was like that on the island. We checked in with a map and had people confirm locations when we could, but, as you said, people are not always so truthful.
[Akira nods at Yin Yu as he focuses on squashing the toasted marshmallow between two slabs of graham cracker and chocolate]
Our first killer pretended she fell asleep outside on accident. This was before we knew about the effects, so we didn't question her.
Other killers just made things up, or wound up sleeping in the same areas as others and pretended to have the same effects they did. It's not a foolproof plan, but it's something.
[ he's stoking the fire with a stick, meanwhile, pensive ]
If what they've said is right, and killers here will be acting of their own volition, [ sort of ] there's a good chance they'll be better prepared, and a higher chance that people will be acting together and cover one another. [ thanks, bummer mcbumbum. ] But Akira's right. It's something. We need to take advantage of every possible edge we've got, no matter how small.
These effects are still rather new to me. [ yin yu ducks his head, a little bow of it. ] I feel as though I'm still trying to catch up with it all.
[ then again, they all...slept...outside, so what effects could there really be. ] The two of you were in your respective 'games' for a long time, weren't you?
You have both been through much. [ he sees.... also, there's a tiny glint in his eyes open taking the s'mores. he's come to like these quite a bit... it's a nice gesture. ] Though the time was much shorter, I'll do my best to be helpful to you all as much as I can. I like the idea of keeping each other honest, as well.
[ it's an easy agreement, even though if it was, the thots win, because they got a bad end. dick picks a marshmallow for himself to eat raw, like an asshole. ]
You did great last Saturday, Yin Yu. I don't think you have to worry about being helpful.
i had this tag finished and sitting in a tab in my browser?
[ ahaha... he ducks his head, a bit embarrassed... ] No, it certainly isn't... rather, it's more that I want to avoid as much of it as we can. If I can do so by helping others, then I'm glad to be of use.
[ for everyone, goes unsaid. for a moment longer, he's quiet again, content to munch on this tasty treat. ]
[Akira smiles a bit, lips twitching upwards as he extends his second marshmallow over the fire]
It's nice that we're all on the same page. [and he means that, too] It's better than arguing over whether we're being naive or not.
[also since a) the forest was maybe on fire earlier and b) phoenix and others disappeared earlier this afternoon, Akira is-- unsurprisingly-- perhaps a little more tense in this thread than earlier suggested. IT'S COOL. HE'S FINE. HE'S BRUSHING IT OFF]
[ good morning, bitches! the announcement is enough to wake dick up in a kind of "wait what the FUCK" moment (knowing voices is illegal. also. otomame. why) and he sits up-- he's about to go check before he remembers their pact.
forest sleeping means they all look like. you know. they slept on the floor of the forest, but he does not feel otherwise different? he runs a hand through his artful mess of bedhead ]
Okay. [ okay. priorities are not the dead body, no matter how much dick wants to go check, so he's quick to scribble "??? nothing ????" on a piece of paper in his notebook before ripping off the page and passing it to the next person to tag this ] Let's get this over with?
[. . . he looks a little pale at the announcement, though not as openly furious as he was the following week. his expression is distant, hair also messy and tousled and gross. it's only when Dick speaks that his gaze jerks up and he nods]
-- right.
[right. priorities are not the dead body]
[there's a pause]
[. . .]
[wait. . . this can't be right. he feels. . . fine??? ??????]
[Akira takes the pen and scribbles ". . . nothing???" on his notebook as well, before also tearing the sheet off and passing the pen to Yin Yu]
[ the minute the announcement goes off, yin yu is up too. it's not someone that he knows that well, but nevertheless, it's time to get to business. as akira passes him the pen, he mentally does a check over himself, and takes the pen from akira.
.... he writes nothing with the others, too, then looks at them. ] ... [ how strange.
well. it's best that they get up and get to helping the others, isn't it. he puts a hand on his knee and pushes himself up, starting to take a step forward only to
step. backwards for some reason in a sickass moonwalk step.
[ look he doesn't know what a moonwalk is so this is extra weird. he hasn't taken another step, poised perfectly still, and he watches as akira does the exact same thing.
he slowly reaches for his paper, and holds it out. "nothing."
[ he looks surprised at first, and then... pensive, mainly. ]
Okay. Didn't expect that. [ he's not reacting outwardly too much, but he takes a few steps forward and then, when nothing happens, even does a backflip to see? if anything changes? it's necessary. somehow. he moonwalks of his own volition, lastly, stepping out of it after. ] Nothing. There's no blockage at all.
[ sorry to be like this on main he still just sounds curious ]
Master Akira, please focus. [ is flipping onto shadows not enough for you sir ] Master Grayson, can you tell us the last thing you remember before waking up this morning, or not?
[ yin yu was thinking much along the same thing. he doesn't know if dick is the type of person to smoothly avoid getting in trouble or not, but that... would've been a fairly easy red flag to avoid. ]
...Not to mention, if it's the same as it was with young master Evan, then he won't be able to tell us even if he wants to.
[ they're supposed to keep each other honest, though. ] We should observe him for the rest of the day, if possible.
[ don't talk about dick like he's not there? sir. ]
[ it's much of the same for yin yu. still... he's not going to count any chicken before it hatches, and he nods. ]
...such honorable behavior speaks well of your character, Master Grayson. [ a duck of his head. his inability to...walk...like them is not an automatic death sentence. there are too many pieces to each one of these puzzles to assume anything more than a red flag. ]
[ there's a raised eyebrow at akira, because. sure. honest. let's go with that. let's ignore the keeping secrets thing in the background ]
I know I didn't do it. [ there's no hesitation when he says that? ] Unless something took over me and I don't remember it, in which case I'd rather we find out the truth as soon as possible.
[hah. . . that gets Akira to quirk his lips slightly, a barely-there smile appearing on his features. but it vanishes quickly as his expression steels, eyes firm]
Well, let's not jump to any conclusions just yet. We can bring it up tomorrow at trial, but what's going to be the most important is the evidence we find during our investigation.
. . . it's just one piece of a much larger puzzle, after all.
[ yin yu gives a nod, resolve tightening just as much. ]
I agree completely. If it's anything like last week, there will only be trace hints of a crime around the camp, and there are many of us who will be searching. I'd like to look myself, but... [ .... yeah. moonwalking. ]
....We have a long night ahead of us, and more so tomorrow.
[ it's really the backwards thing that's kind of unfortunate. the idea of having to "walk" with his back facing anyone in a camp full of murder is so unreasonably bad and stupid. not being able to do anything is terrible, but he did promise flayn he would rest after their break in, so perhaps this is just a twist of fate...
either way, he gives a mute nod to the other two, in firm agreement with akira. they figured it out last week--let's hope this week will be no different.
...now to try and reorientate himself with walking properly. ]
[ yin yu has never been in a pillow fight in his entire life, but he absolutely ninja dodges this pillow flying at his face out of habit. it does not hit him in the face, but it knocks his mask backwards from the side of his head though so it's sticking up kind of stupidly off of the side of his head.
???
oh. ] ...someone else was involved, Master Grayson.
[ he's getting that pillow back, akira. but he's standing there with his arms crossed raising an eyebrow at both of them ]
I know she was. [ you think he didn't notice?? :/ ] And I know all three of you thought it was for the best, because of what was involved-- but maybe think to include the guy who was walking around normally all day in your plan, if you don't want it to blow up in your face.
[Akira just. . . huffs a little bit, rolling onto his side and propping himself up with one hand as his gaze flickers between Yin Yu and Dick. it's not that Dick is wrong, per se, it's just--]
Well. . . to be fair, by the time Lili got to us, I think you had already been walking around normally in front of other people.
[ he gives just a brief duck of his head in accordance with akira. ]
If you will forgive my boldness for a moment, Master Grayson... we would have benefitted from knowing the cause of it, as well. [ a brief pause... he just sounds as calm and even toned as ever. ] This was the second time that Lady Lili has spoken of you as someone quite trustworthy, and it was at her insistence that I ceded. Even still, she was not forthcoming with details as to why, only insisting that it was important, and that it was not her story to tell.
...I believe I can speak for either of us in saying that we do not mind helping to bear the load, if necessary.
[ dick's gaze lingers on akira for a second (all the more reason to not?? go through with it??) before he sighs, sticking his hands in his pockets and looking at yin yu. ]
I wasn't certain about the cause myself at first, but I had a hunch. Which meant I knew it was for the best if we were just straightforward with it to start with-- everyone here has more than enough cause to be paranoid of one another without adding to it by keeping unnecessary and obvious secrets.
[ keyword being. unnecessary and obvious, mainly. ]
[. . . at that, Akira's expression just sort of wrinkles in frustration. it doesn't seem to be directed at Dick, though. he's staring at the ceiling again]
[quietly]
. . . you know it's not that easy, Dick.
[what with how there are so-called consequences for them sharing teams and powers with more than a certain number of people a week]
Is it not easier to confirm such things when more than one pair of eyes have looked on it? None of us are so new to this that we are hopeless in investigating, or at least corroborating details.
[ he's in agreement with akira--but, as a certified Lone Wolf TM, he gets where dick is coming from. ] I would rather be careful of something or someone I do not know well, than cause fingers to point unnecessarily where I have placed some of my trust. We cannot control the actions of others in camp, only those of ourselves, and I am not the type to be so easily made paranoid.
That's not what I'm saying. [ that works for? both of them? sort of. ] There are ways to be careful in situations like these, without putting anyone at risk.
[ but he shakes his head ]
Hopefully, it won't happen again, and this'll be a moot point. But I'm serious. Don't try to hide anything so obvious again. This could've easily blown up in all our faces even worse than it already did.
[there's a lot Akira could say here, but. . . there's not much of a point to starting an argument. he's far too tired to do so, anyway. so he rolls over again to peer at Dick, expression neutral]
[. . .]
Are you lecturing us because you're not-so-secretly touched we wanted to protect you?
[DISGUSTING!! Dick likes his roommates a lot news at 11]
Aw. I'm glad you're a guy in tune with his feelings, then.
[still teasing, but his tone does soften just a little bit, perhaps slightly pleased at the fond notes in Dick's voice]
If it helps, if we really did think you were suspicious, I don't doubt that Yin Yu and I would be the first to say it. [a pause, his gaze flickering towards his other roommate] . . . if only because I don't think you're the kind of guy who would stand for someone innocent being executed in his place.
week zero, thursday night
[Akira, who had returned early-- as he promised Dick-- immediately freezes from his spot sitting atop his top bunk]
-- fuck.
no subject
fuck. dick had been lounging on the bed underneath, idle, and the sound makes him sit up. he'd expected it, but... that doesn't mean he'd wanted it. ]
... And Tsuru's not back, either. Great.
[ actually, he hates being right? ]
no subject
[feels something in his chest sink]
It's-- [mmmmmm it's okay it's okay it's okay, right??] It's fine.
He said to assume that Lili and Ookurikara didn't let him leave if he didn't come back in time.
They probably just held him up.
[Tsuru isn't here but at least they know where he is, right?]
no subject
[ even if he had one which he DOESN'T ]
no subject
[he echoes Dick, as though two of them affirming that it'll be okay will make it okay?? it's fine. it's fine!!]
. . . augh, damn it. I should've asked the counselors for some tin clasps and silk yarn. . .
[because then he'd at least have a lockpick, even if it didn't work]
no subject
Uh. Any particular reason why?
no subject
[hops off of the second bunk, striding over towards the door with a deep frown]
I could make some lockpicks if I had enough. Not that they'd work, but at least we'd have them to try.
no subject
Alright, McGuyver. [ it's not disbelief, considering everything else, but he still needs to make the joke. ] We knew this might happen. It's... frustrating, but at least we weren't taken by surprise. Let's try to see how long we stay up. Maybe the door locking will be the only portion of it.
[ will it, tho ]
no subject
. . . back at the mansion we passed out at midnight.
Soooooo if we are forced into a deep, unnatural sleep, we've only got about an hour before it happens.
[ANYONE GOT A WATCH]
no subject
no subject
[khhhhh. . . leans his shoulder against the wall and just sort of. slumps]
Maybe it makes it easier for people to accidentally get stuck outside.
no subject
[ dick is pacing the tiny cabin so. they're doing great. ]
Earlier today, you said people who slept outside their rooms had-- weird effects?
no subject
[he thinks back on that conversation and sort of. makes a face, but. for now he'll focus on what Dick is saying]
I spent one Thursday night in the billiards room, only to wake up the next day unable to answer any questions with anything other than magic 8-ball quotes.
Those kind of weird effects.
no subject
What, like, "outcome uncertain"?
no subject
"Cannot predict now."
no subject
no subject
[NOW HE'S JUST BEING A SHIT]
But yeah. Every week. People staying in the library would get random knowledge, some people woke up with phantom injuries that faded the next day, and one week people even smelled like perfume.
It was an easy way to tell who actually fell asleep the night before. Anyone who was either awake at night or who fell asleep in their room didn't have these effects.

[ ??????? ]

[a beat]
Mostly. People could lie about their effects pretty easily.
[plus when more people stayed in their rooms it became more difficult to tell who was clear due to ROOMS and who was clear due to MURDER]
no subject
no subject
It's just a learned skill.
[some people are better at catching liars than others]
no subject
Think you've got it?
no subject
[a wry crack of a smile, but it doesn't reach his eyes]
I think I do.
no subject
Yeah, I guess we've all had some practice. That's... hopefully, it'll work in our favor.
no subject
[but he keeps that to himself, and instead just. . . looks away]
week one, thursday night
[either yy or dick get the campfire started because Akira doesn't know how to start fires, but either way, once said fire is started Akira is going to casually toast his marshmallows over it]
Soooooo.

Mmm. It should be the first thing we do when we wake up tomorrow morning. Write it down at once, and then share it at once.

Our first killer pretended she fell asleep outside on accident. This was before we knew about the effects, so we didn't question her.

no subject
[he cracks a smile, then hands his finished s'more over to Yin Yu]
We'll keep each other honest.
[and then, in an answer to Yin Yu's question]
Seven weeks. The island was. . . two, right?
no subject
For what it's worth, we didn't have effects on the ship, either.
[ and. since he is ASKING; ]
51 days. [ there's a weird tone when he says that, but he shakes his head ] So, seven weeks as well for us.
no subject
You have both been through much. I like the idea of keeping each other honest, as well.
[ it's... nice to have a little camaraderie. ]
no subject
Just because you were only on the island for two weeks doesn't mean you also haven't been through a lot.
[reaching for another marshmallow. more toasting!!]
no subject
Trauma isn't a competition.
[ for everyone, goes unsaid. for a moment longer, he's quiet again, content to munch on this tasty treat. ]
MOOD THO
It's nice that we're all on the same page. [and he means that, too] It's better than arguing over whether we're being naive or not.
[also since a) the forest was maybe on fire earlier and b) phoenix and others disappeared earlier this afternoon, Akira is-- unsurprisingly-- perhaps a little more tense in this thread than earlier suggested. IT'S COOL. HE'S FINE. HE'S BRUSHING IT OFF]
no subject
Does that happen to you that often?
[ the arguing over being naive. like. he's noticed it here and he is no stranger to it, but. curious ]
no subject
also watching for people to come out sounds like a great reason good job everyone. ]
no subject
[but he doesn't seem bothered by it!]
I guess that's just the way it looks to people who only know the part of me that argues for the right thing.

[ or like, a power use against yin yu specifically? don't make him moonwalk everywhere he'll never sleep outside the cabin again ]

[then he looks down at his paper]
[and holds it out so both Yin Yu and Dick can see the ". . . nothing??" he wrote down]
Oh.
. . . oh no.

[-- and winds up sliding completely backwards instead. MORE MOONWALKING FTW]

no subject
Okay, so we're walking backwards everywhere. That's not so bad. Let's just...go.
[ ... but when dick takes a step forward, he is walking normally. ]

Last I remember, we were here making marshmallows. I haven't gone anywhere else.
[ ... well, he sounds truthful and unaffected enough? ]

[ don't talk about dick like he's not there? sir. ]

Well. . . to be fair, by the time Lili got to us, I think you had already been walking around normally in front of other people.
[by then it was too late!!]

[quietly]
. . . you know it's not that easy, Dick.
[what with how there are so-called consequences for them sharing teams and powers with more than a certain number of people a week]

[ or so easily disloyal. ]

[ but he shakes his head ]
Hopefully, it won't happen again, and this'll be a moot point. But I'm serious. Don't try to hide anything so obvious again. This could've easily blown up in all our faces even worse than it already did.

[. . .]
Are you lecturing us because you're not-so-secretly touched we wanted to protect you?
[light and teasing!!]

...but akira's comment makes it so he has to duck his head, to hide a smile and an amused huff. that's how it is, is it...? ]
no subject
If you think that's a lecture, wait until I'm actually mad at you. [ he shakes his head ] Not that I needed the protection, but I am a little touched.
[ he admits it very easily? thank ]
