[Someone is absolutely kicking in the door that exits to the pool area dramatically, letting it slam open and bounce against the wall with a loud thud. Then he's just strutting out onto the deck like he should be there, not a care in the world. He's also dressed slightly differently in that he's got sunglasses on, his shoes have been replaced with sandals, and his shorts are swimming trunks. Because, you know, party at a pool. He assumes swimming will happen at some point. But he still has his stupid green jacket on over a t-shirt, because he's still a fashion disaster.]
I heard that this is definitely a pizza party and not a murder, so I'm expecting some good pizza here.
[He perks up when he sees Chuuya flounce his way in, even if his outfit is horrendous. He's just hanging out at the poolside bar, already ready to start everyone off with cocktails no matter what time it actually is... Waving!!]
[He'll have to adjust his to see it, after NHS's execution he has taken to keeping it on his upper arm, under his coat. But once he slides it down, he can see it.]
Nice job on sending that note about how Akira shouldn’t reveal you were Sanji’s replacement when we were all in the middle of discussing who Sanji’s replacement could be, by the way.
It's safe to share roles and teams-- even the teams of people we know who aren't a part of this group-- with these people without consequences. Between everyone, we have a list of everyone's teams in camp. No powers, no titles, just teams.
[. . .]
Let's start sounding off teams and roles for Chuuya, okay? Role names, duties-- that sort of thing.
Sure. Flayn and I are Wickets. We're on Winter Wizard's team. I only became a Wicket last week, so after Chuuya, I'm the newest one.
[. . .]
Our jobs rotate around every week. This week we were allowed to send a note, last week, we played a dart game and got everybody those items from home. Various stuff like that.
And I'm on Winter's team. You know that already. My job title is Safety Counselor. I can choose one person to protect each week. If they're targeted, I can intervene in the murder.
I'm allowed to try to intervene non-lethally, but whether that works is. . . [waggles. a hand] I haven't been able to test it out yet, so.
[looking. over at the other six]
And what these guys aren't saying-- what they can't say-- is that sometimes they're tasked with committing the weekly murders.
[NO!!! reaches out to place a hand on Chuuya's shoulder, steadying himself]
Think of it like the monsters back at the mansion, only. . . they're still themselves. And if someone doesn't die each week we all die, right. . .?
So it's like a failsafe to prevent a TPK. [well he doesn't know that for sure but that's what it seems like] Taako and Tonbokiri, and Wei Wuxian and Beau, have known about each other since the beginning. Flayn was working with Shinobu, but is now working with Magnus. Their separate groups didn't know about each other until Sunday.
And I didn't know about any of them until yesterday.
If you think about it - three teams of people throwing darts at the same bullseye, not knowing the other ones are there - somebody's gettin' a dart in the face there, huh?
Thinks started going a little better this week, though. We found each other, and now we're just, uh. We literally can't talk about this most of the time, but seems like we can talk about it a little with the other roles, so we wanted to find you guys.
Knowing that, I'm amazed you all were able to come together as a group in the first place.
[How did you all not dart each other in the face more, it's a miracle.]
So, what now? I'm sure you all know what my role does already, and if you've already pieced together everyone's teams, then we just sit here playing darts? Or is there some point to it all?
[Well, about that. You'll notice a lot of the team members here happen to care a lot about each other.
Anyway, shaking his head.]
Nobody's asking you or Akira to do any of that. Or even to look the other way. Just. This started seeming to work a little bit. It started feeling like a good thing. We wanted to widen the circle.
Widen the circle to what point though? We still have to find a way to end the game. And I'm kinda hoping it doesn't end with "massive throwdown now that everyone knows everyone."
Correct me if I'm wrong- [To the rest of The Squad.] -but I believe the plan is widen it to all roles first, just to see if anything significant changes once we're all together. We figure out where to go from there after that.
So we all hold hands and show how good of friends we are, and whatever's making all of this happens goes 'oh no, not the power of friendship!' and lets us go?
[He's slightly less doubtful of that because that's how they beat the house, but.]
Well, I guess it's better than the alternatives right now.
Widen the circle to everyone if we can, but. Y'know. So far, we're both physically unable to do that and also think there's a good chance someone's gonna do a revenge murder if we do. And I think that would be bad?
[I mean, obviously it would be bad for them to be killed, but besides that.]
Our roles pass on, just like Sanji's did, but we'd have to start from scratch with somebody new.
Well, these roles are given to new people if one of us dies, right? And by my count, if the nine of us each got to pick three people to save, we would be at 36. The nine of us, plus the 27 we'd be saving. And that's really close to the number of people here in the first place.
Maybe it's something like that? Something something 'the last nine remaining win and get to pick who to save, and if those nine are selfless and pick everyone else then it shows true friendship and everyone lives'?
We have one more person to find before we have all of the roles, and we're hoping that something good happens when we-- ah. . . invite them to our pizza party.
We know who they are, too. It's just a matter of. . .
. . . If she’s willing to throw away her chance at reviving them, a chance at getting everyone else she cares who are still asleep, for some petty revenge, I guess she can make that choice.
if we explain it as 'this is your chance to bring them back', she might be able to hold off long enough to do that. But she's going to be salty as fuck the whole time.
The point is, this whole game, the intrigue, the solution— the death and darts is all a distraction. You . . . can be angry about it, I’m not gonna pretend that I wouldn’t be, but instead of working together, talking to each other, we’re all caught up in this revenge cycle. Focusing on finding some sort of justice when the only justice we’ll ever actually get is beating the entity that’s running this place.
I know you hated what I pulled last trial, you didn’t try and hide that, but . . . the reason most of us from these roles are still alive is because we, for reasons I can’t explain, cared so hard about one another we managed to pull off a good enough cover every week. I think it’s almost better, that every here cares so much about people they try to keep them alive that hard. That we care about that more than solving a crime or obeying the orders of a disembodied voice. You can understand that, right?
So, right now, we’re just trying to gather everyone with roles, maybe shift the focus onto an actual solution instead of twiddling our thumbs while the countdown clock ticks, and maybe all stay alive long enough to see it. Bring everyone back, instead of giving into this dumb “pick your 3 favorite people” shit.
[I'm so sorry for this, but Taako struck a nerve in Chuuya.]
That's really fucking easy for you to say, when you're on the side that's in the know. Is it really that hard to understand why someone would want to know the truth of why their friend died?
Hey, fuck off. It's so easy for you to just make judgements! No matter who we played darts with, it would've hurt somebody. You don't get to fucking judge anybody, you haven't had to --
I'm not saying I had it worse than anybody. I've lost people too, but we've all lost people. I had the luxury of knowing, but it didn't make it any fucking easier.
All of us have been carrying this weight so nobody else has to. That's all.
Mm. He’s right. It would have been someone else. It had to be someone. Even if you chose to die instead, then there wouldn’t be a murder to even solve, and someone would die in the ring regardless.
And YOU don't get to decide who is and isn't upset about someone dying! Murder is murder, regardless of the reason. And it's always going to leave someone hurt.
If you're really killing people for the greater good, then at least accept your judgement for it.
I— don’t think any of us are saying we don’t accept that, my dude? We’re just saying to please just shove it deep down inside for, like, a week or two, while we solve the problem of everyone dying first, please?
[Bluntly. He could rant for ages about it, but he's going to spare Akira that. Akira has heard it all in the past anyway.]
I know what you're going for, but I can't do it. I can't forget what Natalie went through- what she's still going through- and I can't forgive Beau for defending that sack of shit.
[. . . oh. it's about that. . . less the roles and more a lingering soreness from a perceived betrayal by Beau. his expression softens]
What Nie-san did has nothing to do with Beau's role. That's a personal matter you two will have to work out. [. . .] And you can work it out, you just both need to get a handle on your anger first.
[they're both so incredibly explosive it's hard to get them to talk feelings rationally]
I'm not asking you to forgive. Nobody here is. I haven't forgiven whoever killed Minako, or Sanji, or Zenitsu. All of that— it still stings.
. . . I just want you to cooperate. So we can save everyone— Natalie's friends included.
[it sucks. Chuuya's natural inclination is to hold onto his anger and burn it to the ground. But that's not going to solve anything here, he knows it. He just has to accept that he's going to be mad and try to cooperate even though he's mad.
But it's Akira who's asking this of him, and it's Akira who's holding his hand and offering to help him through it. So it should be fine, right? Because if nothing else, he can trust Akira.]
I can't promise anything. But I'll try.
[His temper is too terrible for promises, but maybe 'I'll try' is enough.]
I'm serious. It isn't that hard to say, "I consider you a friend so when you lied about knowing Nie-san's power it hurt my feelings. I trust you and I don't handle being lied to by people I trust very well. Plus also I was worried about Akira and I'm kind of holding a grudge over him targeting Akira?? I get you care about him but I'm mad and I'm not going to stop being mad??"
Akira. You're my friend, and I try to give you the benefit of the doubt. But if you think I'll get ten words into that without saying 'fuck you' or her saying 'fuck you', then you're kidding yourself.
[He'll answer him. He doesn't fully disagree, as he can read from his serious expression.]
It's two sides of one shitty coin, yeah? One side gets to know, and even has the power to do some shit to protect the people they love. But they also get put through hell and risk their lives. The other side doesn't know anything, including whether they'll lose their lives, or whether they'll lose the people they love.
I don't think it's right, or what any of us are saying, that the first group had it worse. I think we're saying that it's all bad.
Exactly. We didn't exactly think you were gonna throw us a parade or anything.
[Smiling a little at that.]
You can be mad about it. But we also would really like to not have to keep doing this. One way or another, it's not gonna stop until either two teams are dead or we've found a different way to save ourselves.
[Magnus already said most of what he wanted to, so he'll just quietly add:]
We do understand. If people choose to seek answers or retribution later, I don't think many of us would deny them what they're looking for. But for now, we can only do and say so much - and what all of us want is to deliver everyone from this place safely.
[He does try his best to do exactly that! He offers a little quirk of a smile, wry as it is.]
Thank you. Trust me - I understand the anger, and I'd certainly do nothing to stop you from venting it fully if we didn't have- [VAGUELY WAVES A HAND.] -other things at hand, you know? [...] Want a drink?
It tastes terrible on its own. [He would know since he was very excited to see what a clear fizzy drink tasted like, after discovering the joys of carbonated alcohol...
But it's good to mix with syrups, at least! Ah... [PATS THE BAR.] I do sometimes miss having fully stocked bars, back there.
[Oh no, Chuuya is still sweet... He huffs out a little laugh, waving his free hand.]
I'm just complaining to complain, don't mind me. Taako enjoys the hot tub here, and the pool is nice! It's far enough away from everyone else that we won't easily get ourselves into trouble just yet, too.
When I’ve asked why we’ve had so many bodies each week, simply out of curiosity, the Directors have told me that it was a direction they recieved. That otherwise this game would take too long, week after week, probably on account of no one wanted to actually . . . play darts.
[sometimes you get mad at your friends but they're still your friends!! Chuuya might be mad but he saw how protective he got of Beau when Magnus threatened to toss her overboard]
There are some things I'm a little mad at them about too, but they're still my friends, and I won't forget that.
C'mon, you gotta know me better by now. Yeah, after everything that's happened this past week, I'm definitely just gonna kill Beau by throwing her off a boat for a bit.
no subject
I heard that this is definitely a pizza party and not a murder, so I'm expecting some good pizza here.
1/7
The pizza was pretty good yesterday.
2/7
Hey, Chuuya.
3/7
Fuck, I was really hoping Phoenix lied to me.
4/7
Yeah, but there’s not gonna much fuckin’ pizza if I keep having to do these every single day . . . ?
5/7
Glad you could make it, friend!
6/7
I’m glad you came, Chuuya
no subject
Okay no there isn't. There's a seventh. She's just easy to miss because she's sitting next to Tonbokiri, who is a giant, and she's tiny.

...huh. I guess it did change. What does it mean?

We don't know yet. But the sequins on our scrunchies change after we find each other.
It might have something to do with forming a single team. A "super team," as Magnus put it.

[but he does anyway, just in case. just so Chuuya hears it again]
no subject
[If he can make a weak attempt at a joke, then he's probably calmed down enough to talk. Maybe.]
no subject
[it's okay he can joke along with Chuuya. IT HELPS!!]
So let's keep hypothesizing, okay? Stuff that anger away for when we're all out of here in one piece.

[He isn't even mad at Magnus here, it's just hard to stop once he's started being mad.]
Something's gotta change. That's why you all came together, yeah? So things can change.
no subject
[Smiling a little at that.]
You can be mad about it. But we also would really like to not have to keep doing this. One way or another, it's not gonna stop until either two teams are dead or we've found a different way to save ourselves.
no subject
[He's going to stay mad, but he'll be mad about it later. Contain the rage to get work done.]
I said it at the trial, but switching teams so we're all on the same team seems like the most obvious way to get around those win conditions.

Subtle? Chuuya?]

We do understand. If people choose to seek answers or retribution later, I don't think many of us would deny them what they're looking for. But for now, we can only do and say so much - and what all of us want is to deliver everyone from this place safely.
no subject
Alright, fine. If it gets everyone out safely, then I'll deal with it.
no subject
Thank you. Trust me - I understand the anger, and I'd certainly do nothing to stop you from venting it fully if we didn't have- [VAGUELY WAVES A HAND.] -other things at hand, you know? [...] Want a drink?
no subject
[He's assuming the drinks are alcohol.]
no subject
Something without alcohol, then.
no subject
What do you got here?
no subject
Just about anything you could want! Syrups in all flavor, coffee, sugar, milk, that strange fizzy water...
no subject
Strange fizzy water? You mean soda?
no subject
No, no! I know what that is. It's-- [He'll just disappear briefly below the bar counter and pull out... club soda.]
This, this stuff!
no subject
no subject
But it's good to mix with syrups, at least! Ah... [PATS THE BAR.] I do sometimes miss having fully stocked bars, back there.
no subject
We have one now at camp, don't we?
no subject
[He will do the same thing except he also adds an overly-healthy portion of vodka to his own. Terrible.]
Still wish I never had to set foot back here again, though.

I'm just complaining to complain, don't mind me. Taako enjoys the hot tub here, and the pool is nice! It's far enough away from everyone else that we won't easily get ourselves into trouble just yet, too.

Fine, fine! What is all of this even about?
no subject
If you want, we can push Beau off the boat? We already got her info!
no subject
Hey, no!
no subject
Nope, too late! I'm tossing her overboard!
no subject

. . . We're all friends, here. You can be mad at your friends, as long as we're all friends.
no subject
[sometimes you get mad at your friends but they're still your friends!! Chuuya might be mad but he saw how protective he got of Beau when Magnus threatened to toss her overboard]
There are some things I'm a little mad at them about too, but they're still my friends, and I won't forget that.
no subject
HE'S my friend. The rest of you are 'people I know who are kind of alright, I guess'.
[Just. Clearing that up first.]
...Flayn can be my friend too, sure.
no subject
[SIGHS]
[to everyone else]
Ignore him. He's just a little prickly.
no subject
[Smiling a little.]
But Flayn's a pretty good friend to have. I think that's okay.
no subject
[and he knows Chuuya doesn't use the word "friend" lightly]

Holy shit, that was awesome!

I’ll never let go, Jack!

C'mon, you gotta know me better by now. Yeah, after everything that's happened this past week, I'm definitely just gonna kill Beau by throwing her off a boat for a bit.
